![]() “Now that your number is ported, there are a couple of steps that you’ll have to take in order to continue receiving calls on your mobile phone. I've heard that in some cases, after porting your number into Google Voice, you need to have ANOTHER US based number added as a "forwarding phone" in order to receive calls to my phone. One lingering question I have is about "forwarding". If my caller/recipient has a US based number too, it should be free - otherwise, it will cost me in the form of "credits". I should be able to send/receive text messages and calls from my original US number with this set up.I can choose, in settings, to make the Google Voice app "prefer wi-fi and mobile data" - this way I can use my US based number like normal whenever I am connected through the internet, either through WiFi or data (which I'm accessing through the local sim card).I will have two phone numbers at this point - one "local" number, through which I can access data, and one US number, which I can only access through Google Voice (but which does NOT come with a mobile data plan itself). When I arrive in XXX country, I can buy and use a local sim card for 4G/5G/LTE data. This will end my contract with my current mobile carrier. Before I leave the US, I should port my current number to Google Voice. Can someone tell me if my understanding is correct so far, and where I'm misunderstanding if not? I'm just struggling to wrap my head around how Google Voice works when it comes to forwarding. Hi there - I am planning to spend an extended amount of time abroad in the next few years, and I'd like to retain my US based number that all my contacts have.
